Our Management Committee

Gateshead Behaviour Support Service is monitored and governed by a Management Committee (who act like a school’s governing body).   The current Chair is Cllr. Neil Weatherly.   Members are appointed by Gateshead Local Authority and it meets at least once every term.  Current members are listed below.

Cllr B Coates

Committees: Finance & Staffing; Behaviour, Health & Safety.

I was elected to represent the Deckham ward of Gateshead in 1996 and retired as a self-employed technician of office and retail equipment in 2010.   I stepped down as a Councillor in May 2016.

I am Chair of the Felling Labour Party and vice- Chair Gateshead Labour Group.  I have no pecuniary interests.

Cllr N Weatherley

Committees:  Chair of the Management Committee
Profile: Cllr. Weatherly is an experienced Governor at three Gateshead primary schools and a Trustee at Lord Lawson Academy.  He recently retired from the Civil Service and was Mayor of Gateshead during 2014/15.  He was first elected to Gateshead Council in 1998, having previously been a member of Birtley town council.  He is interested in and supports a number of humanitarian charities and has no pecuniary interests associated with the school.

Miss S Wilson

Committees:  Curriculum & Behaviour
Profile:  Ms Wilson is Education Officer with the Youth Offending Team in Gateshead and is interested in the work on behaviour, safeguarding and safety in the Service.   She has no pecuniary interest in the school.



Mrs S McPherson

Committees:  Curriculum & Behaviour
Profile:  Mrs McPherson is a pastoral leader in a large local secondary school.  She has no pecuniary interest in the school.

Mark Lovett

Profile: Prinicipal of Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy, Gateshead.  Mr Lovvatt has held serveral senior roles leading teaching, pedagogy and learning in schools.  He has no pecuniary interest in the school.

Mrs H Stokes

Committees:  Behaviour, Health and Safety
Profile:  Mrs Stokes is Head of School at Eslington Primary School, Gateshead, a Special  school for children with social, emotional and mental health needs.  She has no pecuniary interest in the school.


Mr H Edwards

Committees:  Finance
Profile:  Mr Edwards is an advisor for 11-19 education at educationGateshead and is a former secondary headteacher.  He is Hub lead for Gateshead and South Tyneside Music Education Hub and has worked with a range of work-based learning providers, further education partners and has led projects aimed at reducing the number of young people not in education, employment or training in Gateshead.  He has no pecuniary interest in the school.



Mrs V Hany

Committees:  Behaviour, Health & Safety

Profile:  Mrs Hany is a staff representative on the Committee and is responsible for Welfare and pastoral care at the Millway Centre.  She has no pecuniary interest in the school.



Mr A Wales

Alan Wales is a long serving member of staff at the Behaviour Support Service.  He teaches science and other subjects at Heworth Hall and in the community as a home tutor.  he has no pecuniary interest in the school.

Mr Doug Pettit

Mr Pettitt  is Headteacher of Kingsmeadow School, a mainstream secondary school in Gateshead.  He has held a range of senior pastoral/behavioural leadership roles in secondary schools in the North East. he has no pecuniary interest in the school.

Mr Kevin Pearson

Mr Pearson is Principal Learning and Skills Manager of learningSkills which provides adult education and training services for Gateshead Council.  He has worked in Outdoor Education, youth services and community education for many years and has extensive experience of managing 16+ learning contracts.  Learning and Skills previously held a Service Level Agreement with the school to provide vocational courses through the InLearning project. There is no current pecuniary interest.

Cllr Leigh Kirton

Cllr Kirton was elected in May 2016 to represent the Deckham Ward and was co-opted by the Management Committee.  She is a member of the Labour party and parliamentary assistant to Ian Mearns, MP for Gateshead.  She is a governor at South Street primary School and Hilltop and Dryden Special Schools in Gateshead. She has no pecuniary interests.
